“Look at that white girl. She’s fat noh?”
“Where?”
“I saw her the other night at the Luce. She was wearing slippers – and they let her in. Imagine? Colonial mentality ra jud,” the tall guy pointed out.
The short guy said a short “Ahh” before proceeding to finish his buko halo in Jo’s. Not even glancing at the white girl walking along the street across Jo’s.
“She’s heading for Burger Delight! She’ll bloat so bad she’ll float away I tell you.”
These guys were probably just dismissed from their classes at the University and they headed straight down here to have a fill of the springy buko halo. I bet its 5 o’clock already. Let’s see: The shadows are long, I see students walking towards the sea. They’re heading for Memento most likely. I’ll check the intersection. I have to crawl all the way to the Jo’s signboard up there.
Oh look what we have here. Exactly 5 o’clock. The intersection is crammed with vehicles. Anyway, I’m going back. That couple across the two guys. They look foreign. Let me eavesdrop a little.
Whew, that was a long walk. I had to clear away before that waiter guy could step on me. I hate these chairs they have here. They smell of chicken feeds and they’re all slimy. Bacteria are everywhere! I should know, I’m small, I’m an ant. I see them. It’s so hard to crawl up these wooden chairs. Don’t think that just because I’m an ant, I don’t care about cleanliness. We get affected by bacteria too, you know.
“Usa ka kinilaw. Ug beer, please. Salamat.”
Whoa, that’s cool. He speaks the dialect. Oh look! He’s taking out his camera. Nice. Nikon, a piece of work. Wait, wait. What are you doing? Shoot, he’s shooting me. Aaghh! Blinding!
Whew, I had to run. Stupid camera. He’s checking out the photos. There I am! Underwater photos. A payag. Probably from Dauin. Oh! He’s a diver. Nice underwater pose!
Back to the two University boys. They love the buko halo. They’re drinking it all up.
“Listen, that couple, ga bisaya?” Tall guy said.
“Haha! Actually,” short guy answered.
“That’s so cool! I want to talk to them. Should I?”
“Right.”
“Hoy, I’m serious noh. I’d love to interview them.”
